The Truth About Lithium Mining: Its Bad But Quickly Getting Better

We were writing an article dispelling the myth that electric vehicles actually produce more environmental damage than traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles when we realized that the lithium story is too complex for a bullet point.

How Is Lithium Produced?

1. Hard Rock: Most lithium is produced from so called “hard rock” mines which exactly what you are thinking about right now.  This method of extraction has been around since the bronze age.  Crushing systems consume rock from mostly ugly open pit surface mines and break down the materials into their components by baking them at high temperatures by burning vast amounts of fossil fuels.  Australia is the biggest lithium producer using this process.
   
2. Underground Brine: This is how most lithium is produced today and it is produced mostly in Chile.  The idea is simple, just underneath the surface of some parts of the earth are vast, lithium rich brine water from lake beds that mostly dried up millions of years ago.  Pump the brine water to large evaporating ponds and let the sun and wind remove the water over time.”…The problem with this comparatively cheap method is that up to 95 per cent of the extracted brine water is lost to evaporation and not recovered, researchers estimate. As the brine water is in hydrodynamic relation with its surroundings, the water-intensive mining process in this extremely arid region causes aquifers to deplete and affects the water balance. 3. Geothermal Brine: Naturally occurring concentrated salt water is pushed at high pressure through lithium rich rock using naturally occurring geothermal energy.  The mineral rich brine was historically considered a major problem for geothermal electricity generation plants because it is corrosive.  Today however it is being considered a new gold mine and is already in commercial scale production in Germany and France .  There a new techniques for removing the lithium from the brine and then returning the water to the ground so there is a very low environmental impact.
   

What Is the Environmental Impact of Lithium Production?

Like all scientific questions, the definitions matter but it is clear that Geothermal Lithium is an environmentalists dream.  Hard rock and underground lithium have some nightmarish CO2, water and land implications but as you can see in the graphic below, sourced from the BBC, Geothermal Lithium production requires very little water, does not impact the land and emits virtually no CO2:

How Geothermal Lithium is Produced at Commercial Scale?

The concepts behind Geothermal lithium have been around since the early 2000’s and some initial commercialization attempts did not work out for a variety of reasons.  However, like all technology, advancements have been made rapidly and in 2020 the lithium extraction has gone from 15 milligrams per liter to up to 200 milligrams of lithium per liter in the latest process from Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).  New geothermal lithium exploration in Cornwall (UK) have found concentrations as high as 260 milligrams per liter which will be commercialized within a few years.

What is the Future of Geothermal Lithium?

The future is very bright for so called green lithium.  The world is expected to consumer 20 times more lithium than it does today by the year 2040 and no-one wants the old open pit mines or evaporating ponds used widely today.
